Fall or Summer?
A universally debated question that has the simplest answer of one or the other. Perhaps pros of each are the only way we can come to a final stand on the subject. What are some pros of summer, you ask? The sun, the tan, a break from academics, starry skies, the hues from the sunset and sunrise as day turned to night and night turns to dawn, summer parties, swimming, etc. Summer is also portrayed as a time for nostalgia. To remember the days, looking back at Capri Sun and popsicles, while your only care in the world was your bare feet on pavement. Maybe summer is just harder to let go because it has a deeper meaning than just sunshine and hot weather…
So how about fall? How do we reminisce on browning grass and long school days? The pros of autumn: Pumpkin spice season, the breeze, cool weather, fall sports events, festivals, hot coffee, the scenery, and, as the media calls it, “the ‘Ber’ months”. Another controversial subject: Autumn or fall? Even though autumn has many pros, people sometimes group it into the start of winter. People, as in those who dread the season of bitter cold and seasonal depression. The cozy feeling of sipping on a coffee while reading your favorite book in front of an autumnal scene is where we introverts thrive. In a way, fall is contradicting summer, nostalgically speaking. Like the leaves, we too must let go of the old to make way for the new.
Now that we see there is a nostalgic/ mental attachment to both summer and fall as well as a physical change in scenery, let’s talk logistics, shall we? In 2024, an informational survey was taken, which resulted in 54% of adult respondents saying that autumn was their favorite season, while 20% preferred summer. Some factors that lead to this result are a much needed refresher after the hot summer nights, the fall foliage, and the crisp feel of autumn. Some Americans also argue that it is the coziness of autumn in sweaters and getting back to a routine that provides a homey appeal.
So there you have it. The favorite season between summer and fall, according to the people, is.. Autumn!☕
