On February 23, 2020, Mohawk Technology Student Association (TSA) hosted its third annual Chili Cook-Off at Mohawk Jr./Sr. High School. With chilis lining the back wall of the cafeteria, guests of the event were able to taste a wide variety of dishes while socializing with others. In addition, guests also entered in a 50/50 raffle and Chinese Auction, much to the delight of many. This year, for the first time ever, members of the Mohawk Musical provided a preview of Newsies to the guests of the Chili Cook-Off.

The Chili Cook-Off stretches far and wide within the Mohawk community, with 21 participants this year. Participants included friends of Mohawk TSA members, parents, community members, and staff. Although intended to be a friendly competition, the Chili Cook-Off heats up quite a bit and truly shows that only the best chili may win. This year, Mr. Carl Sockaci took third place, Mrs. Janet Beatty took second place, and Mr. Ryan Castor took first place.

Although fun for all involved, the Chili Cook-Off does require a degree of planning and preparation. With three of coordination under his belt, advisor Mr. Carl Sockaci plans the fundraiser each year with ease and peace of mind.

“We know what works and what doesn’t.” notes Sockaci. “We sort of have a system down.”

Each year, Mohawk TSA hosts the Chili Cook-Off in order to raise money for the Pennsylvania TSA State Conference. Hosted at Seven Springs Mountain Resort, the state conference is an opportunity for members of the organization to demonstrate their STEM skills and compete against other students from all corners of the state. For most members, participating in the state conference is a highlight of the school year and something to look forward to.

However, the state conference tends to be quite expensive. Averaging to cost about $300 per student, the trip can be quite a financial burden for some. The introduction of the Chili Cook-Off in the 2017-2018 school year has allowed for all students of any background to attend the state conference, show off their skills, and to make memories of a lifetime. This year, the Chili Cook-Off was quite successful and will significantly reduce the cost of attending the state conference for all members.

Mohawk TSA will attend the Pennsylvania TSA State Conference from April 15, 2020 until April 17, 2020. Stay tuned for updates regarding awards and titles won by Mohawk TSA members.
