On Friday, February 23rd, 39 Mohawk students traveled to Acrisure Stadium for the 2024 Polar Plunge. The Pittsburgh Polar Plunge is a huge fundraising event for the Special Olympics. This organization provides training and competition in a variety of sports, including Mohawk’s Unified Bocce Team.
Held at multiple locations, the Polar Plunge event is simply plunging into cold water. Yet it is not so simple, and in fact very very cold water. But thousands of people still participated, as the Plunge is for a great cause. A message from Special Olympics: “Proceeds go to help provide year round sports training and competition for athletes. Additionally, your contribution and involvement helps athletes achieve their goals, live happier lives, and have a sense of inclusion in the community.” Polar Plunge and Special Olympics has a big impact, even here, in our Mohawk Community.
This is only the second year Mohawk has contributed to the Pittsburgh Polar Plunge, and raised over $6,400! Every student that attended raised money for the cause. Noah Dutkewycz, a 7th grader, raised the most with $1,383! Nevaeh Grimes, an 11th grader, had the most donors, raising $720. Mason Greene (Grade 12) and Andrew Verdi (Grade 12) were also students that raised a large amount of money. Mason with $533, and Andrew with $416
With large donations, coming from friends and family of these students, certainly added up around Western Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh Polar Plunge made the statement on their website, “For the first time in Special Olympics Pennsylvania history, a fundraiser reached the $1 million mark!”
