Mohawk Girls Cross Country has been one of the most accomplished teams Mohawk has ever had. In recent years, it has just been the Girl’s Varsity team achieving titles, but could 2023 be the year both the girl’s and boy’s team end the season as Section Champs?
The boy’s team has not had a section title since 2008. In fact, this could be one of the fastest boys teams Mohawk has ever had. The team is young but has a lot of potential. The team’s captain Nico (quote) Leading the team in scoring is Junior, Jaxon Schoedel. In a little over a year, Jaxon Schoedel has broken school records over and over again. He is the fastest distance runner Mohawk has had. (insert quote) The boy’s number 2 runner is sophomore, Scotty McConnel. Qualifying for the state meet as a freshmen, Scotty McConnel is an exceptional runner and works extremely hard between his two fall sports. Also a two-sport fall athlete, sophomore, Joey Whippo. Sophomores Ayden Tanner and Mark McKinney run within the team’s top 5 runners. After breaking the junior high course record, freshman, Grayson Ponziani is looking forward to an exciting season. Also new additions are freshmen, angelo conti and seth kauffman. As well as Mohawk’s new foreign exchange student, Benno Carles. It’s going to be interesting to see how this team competes this year.
As for Junior High, the girls team is only composed 8th grader Kali O’laire. The boys have a full team of 7th graders. Who are running the same times as last year’s boys, which is insanely impressive. It will certainly be interesting how the teams compete in the county.
The 2022 cross country season was tough for last year’s girl team. When the season started the girls expected a good run. No pun intended. The girls were state runner ups the year before. The team had lost a couple runners but they were still anticipating titles. The season did not go as expected.
At the the time a junior, Evelyn McClain suffered an ongoing foot injury. This kept her from competing. Later that season, leading scorer, Natalie Lape, broke her foot. At this point, the girls no longer had a team to compete with. The girls still ended the regular season as Section Champions, but races don’t stop their. Mohawk’s Lillian McClain and Ellie Whippo still qualified for the state meet individually.
All the girls return this season, healthy and prepared. Freshmen Kassie McConnel, Audrey Whippo, and Reagan Young are also new additions.
