Mohawk Blood Drive

The Mohawk Blood Drive is the perfect opportunity for students to give back to their community. Although it does take some time, the blood drive is a great experience. About a week in advance, a student will contact a member in Mohawk’s Health Careers Club. The member will then fill out your name and the time you request on a signup sheet. The day of the blood drive, it is important to drink a lot of water and to eat a good breakfast. Once it comes close to the time you signed up, you will start to head down to the auxiliary gym. Your name will soon be called by a nurse and the process will begin. The nurse will then take your blood pressure, temperature, weight, and they will check your iron. If your weight is too low, along with your iron, you will not be able to participate. Not only does this protect the donor, it protects the individual the blood is going to. If all four things are clear and normal, you will then begin a survey of personal, but necessary, questions. These questions include if you’ve left the country, if you’re sexually active, and if you take any prescriptions. After completing the survey, you will then proceed to a reclined chair and a nurse will then begin to take your blood. Once you are finish, there is a mat you can sit on to eat the snacks that are provide to prevent the possibility of passing out. It’s a great opportunity that I greatly encourage you to partake in.
