The varsity football team is looking forward to their first WPIAL playoff berth since 2005. The Warriors achieved a spot in the postseason with their victory against New Brighton on October 6th. The Warriors trailed 13-0 at the half after having a rough start. Knowing what they had at stake, they scored 27 unanswered points during the second half in their comeback win against the Lions. Mohawk’s football team has struggled for the past 12 years, being known as the underdog in the conference.

The Warriors have turned it around this year in head coach Tim McCutcheon’s third season. His first season, in 2015, Mohawk had a lackluster 1-8 season. Last season saw much of the same. Perhaps the only positive thing that came out of it was the Warriors’ explosive win against Vincentian Academy with a score of 68-6. Emotions are surely escalating as the season is coming to a close and playoffs are fast approaching.

With senior leaders such as Devon Yarletts, Kasey McConahy, and Jimmy Argiro, the Warriors continue to surprise as they are 4-2 so far and still have three more games. Yarletts says “It’s amazing. I feel like all the hard work I’ve put into football through the years is finally paying off.” Hard work? You got that right. The team starts lifting in December for the following season, meaning returning players only have about 6 weeks to recover before they start pumping the iron. This season it has revealed that the months and months of hard work and dedication has truly paid off. The Warriors are hopeful that they may go far in the playoffs. Regardless of the result, this football season made history and will surely be one that won’t be forgotten. LET’S GO WARRIORS!
